A contractor removing railway sleepers from the Gilgandra to Coonamble branch line has been dealt a hefty blow to the back pocket with the theft of approximately 18,000 sleepers.
Whilst some pilfering is the norm the contractor, who did not wish to be named, says the whole episode has left a bad taste in his mouth.
Valuing the sleepers at their lowest resale cost he estimates the loss of income to be $180,000.
