Thursday 1 August was a special day for thoroughbred racehorses in the Southern Hemisphere.
It is the universal birthday for all thoroughbred racehorses born south of the equator.
This day was chosen because in the global south the weather begins to heat up in September, prompting mares to come into season.
The extended daylight stimulates the mare’s oestrus cycle. Mares have a gestation period of eleven months which means that the majority of fouls are born around August when there is plenty of food and the mother’s milk is rich.
