In the Paddock with Dr Jill: Rations and Feeding Plans

21/03/2026 by The Coonamble Times

It’s what we’ve been doing morning, noon and night for clients right across the country.

There are dry patches everywhere, pressure on commodities is consistent and stock are worth good money.

To feed or sell, that is the question. We can help you find the answer.

Primarily our goal with any feeding plan is to find the right ration that suits the class of stock.

Energy, protein, fibre, minerals and vitamins. And we aim to make it easy to create, easy to feed out and time effective.

Managing droughts can’t be too tricky, everyone gets worn out, and this time round it feels like we’re already pretty weary.

Many clients have a drought plan and are just enacting it.

Setting dates and trigger points, offloading stock.

It’s hard, but it brings relief.

Others, we are using the gear and the commodities they’ve calculated and stashed away for just this moment.

We are also helping producer source commodities using our wide network of contacts.

Understanding what your animals require, specifically in terms of MJ per head per day and then allocating that feed, safely, in the most energy dense way, is the most cost-effective way to feed stock.

Chucking out a bale of unknown quality hay every few days is just like closing your eyes and spinning the roulette wheel.

Droughts cost money.

The best money you might spend is to set up a feeding plan and get a clear guide on how to handle your stock’s nutritional requirements from the start.

It won’t be long and calving and lambing will arrive, and some science and care will definitely be needed.

Good preparation beats sick or dead stock down the track.

If we can help, we’re around in Tooloon Street, or give us a call on 0408 331 166.
