Shocked Warren council seeks detail on federal government land buy-up

The Federal Government is defending plans to buy up large parcels of land in Warren shire to meet its net zero target.

But Warren Shire mayor Greg Whitely and GM Gary Woodman are seeking advice on why their Shire has been targeted as the only Western Plains LGA where valuable agricultural land will be lost.

It comes after Senate Estimates heard the ABARES Insights Sequestration on agricultural land: impacts and policy trade-offs report shows under the 119 million tonnes of land-based sequestration is needed to achieve net zero, and about 18 million hectares of sequestration projects would need to be established by 2050.
