Locust activity raises concerns ahead of spring

Locust numbers are trending above normal levels across parts of Far West NSW, with authorities warning current seasonal conditions could set the stage for a major spring hatch.

Western Local Land Services (LLS) Risk & Emergency Coordinator Tayla Hopkins said they have recorded locust sightings in and around Coonamble, Dubbo, Gilgandra, and Coonabarabran.

“They are all really big hotspots for them at the moment,” she said.

Authorities are particularly concerned about what above-baseline locust numbers could mean for the region’s agriculture, if populations continue building up…
