Emergency service leaders are warning that declining volunteer numbers and an ageing volunteer base are placing increasing pressure on essential services across the Far West.
In Coonamble, SES Commander John “Tiny” Lewis said maintaining volunteer numbers had become a growing challenge, with many recruits unable to remain involved long term.
In July 2025, the local SES welcomed eight new recruits, but Mr Lewis said only three remain active today.
