Saturday 4 November proved to be prime fire weather in Coonamble and the surrounding district, with the North West Rural Fire Service (RFS) called out to three separate fires on properties around the district.
A relatively hot November day with a peak of 33 degrees was dangerous enough, but it was the storm early in the night that did the most damage, with fast winds and lightning wreaking havoc.
"We had a number of fires due to the storm," said North West RFS Commander Greg Cassidy."From the lightning strikes and the wind."
