Hazard reduction burns just outside Coonamble took place on Monday 27 May as part of the Rural Fire Service's (RFS) effort to reduce future bushfire fuel load.
Greg Cassidy said about five local RFS office staff joined a dozen RFS volunteers from Coonamble, Walgett and Lightning Ridge, in controlled burning that was expected to last "just a few hours" that day.
NSW Fire and Rescue crews also joined, with favourable winds pushing the smoke away from town.
