On 31 January Coonamble Shire Council called for the public to reduce their water consumption to ease the strain on the Coonamble township's water supply system.
Council's statement said water loss from breakages have "constrained" the system, which in the two weeks up to 27 January struggled to keep up with the high summer demand.
Town use in that period rose to about 5.44 megalitres a day compared to 3.42 megalitres two weeks earlier.
