Australian citizens are given certain rights in exchange for certain obligations. One of those obligations is that a citizen must make themselves available for jury service when selected.
It might seem a bit strange that any citizen, with or without any specific knowledge of the law, can find themselves deciding on the fate of another citizen in a courtroom. But being judged by a “jury of our peers”, that is, by other ordinary citizens, is a right that was hard fought for by our ancestors . . .
