With only 22 days of diesel stored onshore, Australia could be at risk of a food delivery freeze in the event of an interruption to incoming fuel supplies.
NSW Farmers Interim CEO Mike Guerin has warned the government to plan ahead of emergency, and is calling for a new national program to monitor fuel stocks to ensure food security.
"Our fuel insecurity is the leak in the tank that could drain our nation of vital food supplies and export markets in just days," Mr Guerin said.
