Cattle farmer Ian Robinson has roughly 220 cows and calves between his two properties east of Coonamble.
Before the year’s out, he expects that number to halve.
Like many vendors at Coonamble’s cattle sale on Wednesday 25 February, he is thinning his herd as drier conditions reduce feed in the paddock.
“All the younger steers and older cows, they’ll go. But little calves all on their mothers will stay here and we’ll just feed them,” he said on 25 February while tending to cattle on his property Walla.
