Coonamble Shire Council is investigating after the email accounts of at least two councillors fell foul of would-be scammers earlier this week.
The accounts have been used to send emails with links appearing as share files, which can lead recipients to give away the passwords to their own emails.
As at Tuesday morning on 12 August, the council is treating the security breach as a potential phishing attempt.
They are advising those receiving the suspicious emails not to open them and to delete them immediately.
