AN increase to the Heavy Vehicle Road User Charges following the May Federal Budget will add further economic pressure to an industry already feeling the cost of living squeeze according to transport industry leaders.
Originally introduced under the Howard administration in 2006, the charge was designed to recoup some of the costs of maintenance on roads.
The decision came following a meeting on 8 May between the state and federal infrastructure ministers which agreed to increase the charge by 6% each year according to a communique that states the increase "strikes the right balance between . . .
