Coonamble golfers put in a strong performance at this year’s Golf NSW State Sand green Fourball Championship in Trundle Golf Course over the weekend bringing home second and fifth prize out of a large field.

Teeing off among 200 starters, Matt Lane and Mick Williams held their own coming in at equal second with a score of nine under at the end of Day One, just one shot behind last year’s champions Nathan Schneider and Vaughan Saunders from Albury.

“We went around with the leaders on Sunday but they were just too strong, we couldn’t keep up with them,” Matt told the Coonamble Times.

Still the Coonamble pair managed to hold out other contenders to claim second with 12 under par, with Schneider and Saunders on 17 under.

Other sand green talents Jake and Justin Fernando were not too far away in fifth position.

In the Fourball competition both players play their own ball and take the best score on each hole.

Matt said the weather was “warm but not terrible, and it was a great weekend away and meeting some new people.” There is a Singles event comping up in Nyngan this October and the 2025 Fourball will be held in Molong.

There is talk of Coonamble Golf Club applying to hold the event in 2027 to coincide with their 100th anniversary.
