Visitor numbers through the Coonamble Information and Exhibition Centre fell sharply during April, with just 175 people walking through the doors compared to 508 visitors during the same period last year.
Coonamble Shire Council Communications Officer Charlotte McLean said the downturn reflected broader challenges currently affecting tourism across regional Australia, with rising fuel costs playing a major role in changing travel behaviour.
“Some visitors stated they were cutting trips short or changing routes due to the increase in costs,” Ms McLean said.
“Some visitors, however, kept travelling as normal.”
